Arbroath

Arbroath Golf Course

This links golf course is perhaps one of the lesser-known links courses in the area but it is certainly worth a visit.  The course is in great condition and the tricky, well-manicured greens are a feature of this true links course.

Alastair and Carol at Edzell

Lindsay Ewart is the professional and his small shop stocks a large selection of golf equipment as well as ladies and gents clothing.

The catering is excellent and you can be assured of a warm welcome.  It can very often happen that Arbroath is bathed in sunshine whilst the rest of the area is having a downpour!

Ballumbie Castle

This golf course is relatively new in that it opened in 2000 and is situated on the outskirts of Dundee.  The greens are fast and tricky and the fairways are wide.  It has a welcoming clubhouse and a helpful professional.

Brechin

Brechin Golf Course

James Braid again had a hand in the modifications to this parkland golf course.  The greens are famous throughout the area for being immaculate but difficult to read.  Accuracy off the tee is important when playing Brechin.

Caird Park

Caird Park Golf Course

Caird Park is one of two municipal courses in Dundee.  It is a parkland course with easy walking terrain.  It is well worth a visit.

Camperdown

Camperdown Golf Course

This municipal course is truly magnificent. At one time the estate belonged to Admiral Duncan of the Battle of Camperdown fame.  It has large variety of deciduous trees including the original Camperdown Elm which is now planted worldwide.  There is an abundance of wildlife and the views are inspirational.  Catering is at a minimum but that should not deter anyone who wishes to experience the joy of Camperdown.  Roddy the Professional can quite happily chat to you for hours about golf and he’s a pretty good teaching professional as well!

Carnoustie Championship Course

Carnoustie Golf Course 18th hole

What can be said about this magnificent course that hasn’t already been said!  It surely must be one of the most testing courses in the world. Even when the wind doesn’t blow (which is hardly ever) the course is still a great test of links golf.  Skill and imagination are the two most necessary ingredients needed to play this superb course. Many dreams have been broken by the sheer ferocity of the 16th, 17th and 18th finishing holes.

Burnside Course – Carnoustie

Burnside Golf Course

This tricky links golf course runs adjacent to the Championship course.  It is a true test of links golf with the railway running up the right side of the first few holes.  The short par three holes are treacherous.  It is not for the faint hearted but is certainly worth a visit.

Buddon Course - Carnoustie

This course also adjoins the Championship course.  It is newer than Championship or Burnside courses but is varied and interesting and somewhat easier than the Burnside course and definitely easier than the Championship Course.

Downfield

Downfield Golf Course

It is hard to believe that this big majestic parkland course is very nearly in the Middle of Dundee.  There are deer and red squirrels, ducks and buzzards with a resident heron.  The golf course is 6822 yards in length and is interesting and varied with quite a few water features. Paul Lawrie qualified here for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 and of course went on to win the great event.

Edzell

Brechin Golf Course

This lovely parkland course transports you into a different world.  It is so peaceful and lovely with the chiming clock tower in the distance.  The golf course is in great condition and the greens manicured to perfection. The course is varied and interesting and a great golfing experience.

Alistair Webster the Professional is very talented golfer and a great teaching professional.  He and his wife Carol have a well-stocked shop with a great variety of golf equipment and a big selection of ladies and gents clothing.  The clubhouse is well-appointed with good catering.
There is also a driving range and West Water is a well looked after 9-hole golf course for people who are short of time.

Forfar

Forfar Golf Course

This wooded heathland golf course with undulating fairways and immaculate greens is definitely worth a visit.  They do say locally that if you can putt on Forfar greens you can putt anywhere!  James Braid and Old Tom Morris are famous names associated with the design of this very interesting golf course.

The clubhouse is well appointed and the members very friendly.

Kirriemuir

Karyn Dallas - Professional at Kirriemuir coaching

James Braid created this lovely course overlooking the glens of Angus.  There are undulating fairways with avenues of trees.  Lochnagar can be seen in the distance from the 4th hole and the views are spectacular.   The short holes are a real challenge especially the 17th which is guarded by two majestic trees and is correctly named “Braid’s Gem”.

Letham Grange

Letham Grange Golf Course

The Old Course with its neighbour the Glen is set within a walled estate and woodland.  The Old Course is a long parkland course with narrow fairways, many dog-legs and an ornamental lake.  The Glen course has fewer hazards than its neighbour and the fairways are quite wide.

Drive time from Dundee – 45 minutes

Monifieth

Monifieth Golf Course

This links course which was laid out in the 17th century is another true test of links golf and is not for the intrepid.  There is a railway line running alongside the first few holes of this golf course so if you slice the ball you are guaranteed to lose quite a few golf balls! If you have circumnavigated these holes without too much difficulty you then turn to face the water!  It is a great links golf course and if you prefer links golf you must surely pay Monifieth a visit.  There is also the adjoining Ashludie course which is shorter and extremely tricky.

Ian McLeod has an excellent golf shop and the catering in the various golf clubs is excellent.

Montrose Medal

Montrose Medal Golf Course

This links course was also established in the 16th century.  It is the fifth oldest course in the world.  Montrose is a traditional links layout requiring good shot-making skills as the wind is always blowing and you no sooner think with relief that the wind is going to be at your back playing the last 9 holes than it turns and you are playing into the wind again.  Still its great fun and if you like links golf this is the place to be.

Panmure

Panmure Golf Course

Ben Hogan practiced at Panmure before famously winning the Open at Carnoustie in 1953.  The greens are small and the bunkers deep. There are whins and deep rough just waiting to catch you out if you play a bad shot.  Every shot really has to be strategically placed.  Not really for the faint hearted but a great experience nevertheless.

Piperdam

Piperdam Golf Course

This is a comparatively new parkland course set just outside Dundee. The first is a par 3 across water which is a tough start and the next few holes are steep and challenging but after the 6th it is relatively flat.  There are lots of water hazards and lovely views.
